AI MVP Cost Benchmark Explorer 2026

Compare build budgets for seven AI use cases, add the costs of running your product and export the assumptions for a scope discussion. Choose an MVP, production or enterprise band. These published ranges support planning; they do not predict an individual quote.

An early AI budget needs a defined workflow and operating costs. Pharos Production AI product engineering provides discovery and delivery services for scoping that work.

Calculate your AI MVP budget

Start with a published build band. Add costs only when they are not already included in that band or your known build budget. The prefilled $5,000 discovery and $1,000 monthly spend are illustrative inputs, not benchmark recommendations. Replace them with your own assumptions. Unknown scope appears as a warning.

What an AI MVP costs in 2026

The $42,000 median and $180,000 90th percentile belong to a single-provider, observational delivery sample. It is not statistically representative of the entire AI services market, and the values are descriptive reference points rather than quotes. Use-case bands are more useful for planning because they preserve lifecycle scope. The dataset scope and normalization notes explain what was counted and excluded.

The 2026 AI development cost research explains the delivery sample, cost drivers and exclusions behind these ranges. Read it before using the worksheet to compare proposals. Its visible update is ; these bands were checked on October 6.

    AI development cost breakdown

A credible budget separates the initial build from operation. Discovery resolves scope. Data work makes inputs usable. Application and model engineering create the product. Evaluation, security controls and launch work determine whether it can run outside a demo.

Build and operating cost compositionA horizontal flow from benchmark build through one-time extras to recurring monthly operations, ending at itemized TCO.Build bandsource or known costOne-time extrasexplicit assumptionsOperationsrun rate × horizonTCOitemized
Lifecycle cost flow. Each user-entered amount stays visible in the export. No hidden multiplier enters the itemized result.

    Hidden and ongoing AI costs

The source describes build cost as 58-72% of first-year total spend. This page therefore solves TCO = build / (1 − hidden share) at 28% and 42%. It does not calculate build × (1 + share), and it never adds the cross-check to the itemized worksheet.

    Itemized worksheet

Use this when model API, infrastructure, observability, human review and maintenance assumptions are available.

    Aggregate cross-check

Use this as a reasonableness band. Its base value is intentionally null because the source gives no supported midpoint.

    Timeline, lifecycle and team model

Source timelines run from 6 to 36 weeks across the use-case table. They describe kickoff to first production deployment. Select MVP for one bounded workflow and its critical integrations, Production for a supported application with evaluation and operational controls, and Enterprise for broader integration, governance and reliability scope. These are planning definitions, not source-derived scoring rules. Team-model selection is qualitative because the source does not publish a supported multiplier for in-house, outsourced or hybrid delivery.

Lifecycle stages from discovery to operationDiscovery precedes data readiness, build and evaluation, then launch and continuing operations.DiscoveryDatareadinessBuildEvaluationLaunch +operate
The timeline boundary ends at production deployment. Continuing operations belong in TCO, not the build duration.

    Worked cost scenarios

    RAG knowledge assistant

    In this illustration, with a $25K-$50K MVP band, $5K additional discovery and a $1K monthly run rate, the 12-month itemized result is $42K-$67K: build + $5K + ($1K × 12). The separate first-year cross-check is $34,722-$86,207.

    Tool-using AI agent

Use the copilot or multi-agent row based on orchestration depth. Unknown integration scope should remain a warning.

    Computer-vision workflow

The $30K-$70K MVP band does not price your labeling, hardware or validation needs separately. Establish what the build includes before adding these costs.

    Enterprise multi-agent platform

The source band begins at $280K and remains open above $500K. Every derived high value keeps the same +. The calculator derives no midpoint or closed ceiling.

Limitations and when this estimate does not apply

The evidence is an anonymized, single-provider observational sample, not a universal market price model. Project-level records and within-band distributions are unavailable, so the calculator cannot infer confidence intervals or predict an individual quote.

    • Research-grade or frontier-scale model training
    • Regulated validation whose evidence burden is not defined
    • Unusual data licensing or dedicated hardware procurement
    • Projects without enough requirements to select a use case and lifecycle
    • Vendor pricing, which is deliberately absent from the model
